Possible causes of hair loss.
Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, is a very common condition whereby certain follicles are lost due to the influences of your genetics and aging. In men, follicles are sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone type II (DHT2). For women it may be a sensitivity to DHT2, but there are likely other factors involved.
In addition to this common culprit, there are other causes of hair loss, including:
- Surgical procedures and aesthetic procedures (such as face or brow lifts)
- Wearing very tight hairstyles such as corn rows that exert a constant pull on the hair; this is called traction alopecia
Hair loss can also be caused by underlying medical conditions, though this is much less common. It is important that anyone seeking hair restoration be evaluated by a physician to rule out a medical condition. These include:
- Connective Tissue Disease
- Hormonal Imbalances
- Thyroid Disease
- Vitamin Deficiencies
- Gynecological Conditions
- Emotional Stress
- Autoimmune Skin Diseases (scarring alopecias)
Furthermore, many women are born with high hairlines. These women are excellent candidates for follicular unit extraction (FUE) and hair transplantation.
The use of some medications can also cause hair loss. These include but are not limited to:
- Oral contraceptives
- Vitamin A
- Thyroid drugs
