A proven medication to combat male pattern baldness.

Finasteride (Propecia® or Proscar®)

Finasteride is an orally administered daily medication used to treat male pattern baldness in men. It is sold under the brand names Propecia and Proscar. It has been proven in clinical studies to slow hair loss in men who are experiencing male pattern hair loss. It provides approximately a 30% improvement rate in hair loss after six months of treatment, and persists as long as the medication is taken. Further research has revealed that 65% of men will experience a reduction in hair loss and even re-growth of hair when finasteride is taken consistently.

What’s the difference between Propecia® and Proscar®?

Propecia® comes in the form of a 1mg pill and will cost about $80 for 30 pills (a one month supply). Proscar® comes in the form of a 5mg pill and the patient needs to cut the pill into quarters to achieve the proper 1mg. This will cost approximately $4 per month.

A 1mg generic Finasteride tablet is available but due to an exclusive manufacturing contract it is still relatively expensive at about $65/month.

Side effects of finasteride

Fewer than 2% of patients experience negative side effects; these include a drop in libido and occasional erectile dysfunction. If a patient experiences any of these side effects, taking half the dose generally addresses the problem. Discuss any concerns with your doctor.
